Muscat: In a grand event, the Oman Olympic Committee (OOC) awarded medals to the winning nations of the 19th Asian Games (held in Hangzhou, China, from 23 September to 8 October) and the 4th Asian Para Games (held in China, from 22 October to 28 October). The ceremony was presided over by OOC Chairman Shaikh Khalid bin Mohammed al Zubair in the presence of many distinguished guests. The awarding of medals to the Sultanate’s Asian achievers is in line with the OOC’s commitment to supporting Omani athletes and praising their outstanding sporting performances at regional and international levels.

The Oman Sailing 49er team, consisting of sailors Musab Hadi and Waleed Al-Kindi, won a silver medal for Oman in the sailing event, while sprinter Hussein Farsi won a bronze medal for the country in the men’s 800m final.

Oman’s Para athletics star Mohammed Al-Mashaeihi achieved a remarkable feat as he won two gold medals in the shot put and javelin. In addition, the Tokyo 2022 Paralympic bronze medallist also earned a direct qualification for the shot put event at the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games in France. Oman’s Para athletics star Mohammed Al-Qasmi won two well-deserved silver medals in the shot put and javelin events.

In his opening speech, the President of the Oman Olympic Committee praised the outstanding achievements of the champions. He said: “We are proud of our national team athletes who performed very well and achieved excellent results in the 19th Asian Games and the 4th Asian Para Games that recently concluded in China. Athletes from the Sultanate of Oman won a total of 6 medals in these two events.”

“This honour is bestowed to support Omani athletes, hoping that they will achieve more glorious results, and to inspire other athletes and national teams to work harder and reach the top level in continental and international competitions.”

Al Zubair expressed appreciation for the positive contributions made by various government departments and associations to achieve this goal.

“Special thanks to the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Youth, the Oman Athletics Association (OAA), Oman Sailing, the Oman Paralympic Committee and all the technical and coaching staff for their hard work,” he said.

Al Zubair concluded his speech by affirming that the OOC will continue to closely monitor and provide the necessary support to all national teams in order to fly high the flag of the Sultanate of Oman at all international events and championships.

Sailor Walid al Kindi thanked the OOC for the honour. He told Oman Daily Al-Monitor: “The honours from the OOC and previously the Ministry of Sports will motivate us to perform better in the upcoming competitions. We are currently preparing to participate in the finals of the Asian Qualifiers for the 2024 Paris Olympics in December in Thailand. The competition will be very fierce and only the first place will qualify for the Olympics. We will work hard to achieve this goal.”

Sprinter Hussein Farsi expressed his joy at the honour after winning a bronze medal at the Asian Games. “I am happy to be one of the winners of this top Asian Games event. It is a great moment and I am working hard to achieve more and better results in the near future. I am currently in Kuwait, preparing under the guidance of my coach Fahad Al-Shammari for the Asian Indoor Championships in Iran in February 2024 and then the World Indoor Championships in London in April next year,” he concluded.
