The Sultanate of Oman won four medals at the West Asian Athletics Championships, which concluded in Basra, Iraq, on Saturday. Omani athletes won one gold, one silver and two bronze medals. Salim bin Abdullah Al Rawashi won the bronze medal in the men’s long jump with a score of 6.91 meters, while Iraqi athlete Abdullah Gamel won the gold medal with a score of 7.43 meters, and his teammate Ehab Yassin won the silver medal with a score of 7.03 meters.
Sprinter Mazoon Alavi won the bronze medal in the women’s 100-meter hurdles with a time of 15.61 seconds. Iraqi athlete Kurdistan Jamal (14.73 seconds) won the gold medal, and Syrian athlete Al Yasar Yousuf Al Mohammed came in second with a time of 14.87 seconds.
Hiba Asmi won the silver medal for Oman in the javelin with a throw of 40.67 meters. Earlier, on the opening day of the Games, young sprinter Al Mulem bin Darwish Al Barouch won the country’s first gold medal in the men’s 100 meters with a time of 10.25 seconds. Azza Yarubi won the silver medal in the women’s 100 meters with a time of 12.01 seconds.
Sayyal Anzi, president of the West Asian Athletics Federation, said the event was a great success in Iraq. “We are very happy that this event has returned to Iraq after a long time. Thanks to the hard work of the local organizing committee, the event was successfully concluded. I am very satisfied with the results, especially those athletes who have qualified for the Paris Olympics.”
The tournament saw the participation of 14 countries, including Iran, which was participating for the first time. Oman’s delegation consisted of 15 athletes, including Barakat al Harthy, Ali al Balushi, Mubeen al Kindi, Mohammed al Saadi, Khalid al Ghailani, Hamza al Jabri, Al Mulham al Balushi, Salim al Rawahi, Hana al Qasmi, Azza al Yaarubi, Mazoon al Alawi, Alaa al Zadjali, Duha al Sinwai, Azza al Hinai and Hibaa al Asmi.
