Therefore, the appointment of Jack Trbojevic as captain is one of the biggest decisions in Michael Maguire’s career and in the recent history of the New South Wales team.
It remains to be seen whether James Tedesco will remain in the squad, but all signs point to Dylan Edwards getting the nod at full-back, and it is unlikely that an out-and-out No.1 will be available as a back-up to the Blues’ No.17.
There is also the question of whether the co-captain is needed given that Trbojevic can play 80 minutes but is not sure in the Origin furnace.
The Manly man has long been cherished by his teammates for his selflessness and wholehearted approach to the game. Andrew Webster writes after Origin I in 2022Afterwards, Brad Fittler and his coaching staff knew sacking Trbojevic was a mistake and rushed him back, culminating in a big win over Queensland in Perth.
He was also one of the friendliest men in the game, often mumbling apologies to the poor opponents he stopped with his standard tackle.

There is no doubt that he is a true leader. But Trbojevic rarely captains the team because Daley Cherry-Evans always does so and he has been fit almost all of his Manly career.
Trbojevic first captained the Sea Eagles in 2016, his second full season in the NRL, replacing Jamie Lyon.
He captained the club 14 times in total – achieving a record of 5 wins and 9 losses, with the last time as captain coming in 2022 when Cherry-Evans was unable to play.
And for the record, when Tedesco took over as New South Wales captain in the Origin Series at the end of the 2020 season after Boyd Cordner missed time with concussion, he had not captained any senior side at all.
