“Basic technologies like bicycles, clean-burning wood stoves, and even the humble apple corer seem to offer a lot of benefits and very few drawbacks. More complex, world-changing technologies not only have the biggest drawbacks, but often They create their own needs. Take cars for example. They initially allowed us to get to destinations faster, but the end result is that the places people need to go are often further apart.
Some technologies do the opposite of what they promise. For example, social media is supposed to bring us together, but loneliness has become common in our society. A recent survey showed that 61% of Americans (three out of five) say they feel lonely. Plains Indians in the 19th century probably suffered little from loneliness. They live in tribes of about 300 people, with blurred lines between family and community. Basically the entire tribe is one person’s family.
Choose your technology wisely. I live in Maine where it snows a lot. My neighbor’s snowblower needs oil, maintenance, and sometimes gets clogged or broken. My snow shovel has never broken and helps me maintain a six pack at age 65! “

-well said.
