SEOUL: North Korea launched two ballistic missiles on Monday (July 1), with the second missile possibly malfunctioning and exploding during an abnormal flight, South Korea’s military said, possibly showering missile debris inland.
South Korean military spokesman Lee Sung-joon told a news conference that South Korea was still analyzing the launch and had no immediate confirmation of any casualties or property damage to North Korea.
South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff said earlier that North Korea launched a short-range ballistic missile that flew about 600 kilometers and a second ballistic missile that flew about 120 kilometers, both from areas near the west coast.
Both missiles were reportedly fired in the northeast direction.
Judging from its trajectory, the second missile may have fallen in an area near the North Korean capital of Pyongyang, but Lee said the military could not comment further.
South Korea says it monitors North Korea’s missile launches from the preparation stage and tracks their flight.
“We strongly condemn North Korea’s missile launch, which is a provocative act that seriously threatens peace and stability on the Korean peninsula,” South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff said in a statement. It also said it had shared information about the missile with U.S. and Japanese authorities.
“With a strong ROK-U.S. joint defense posture, the South Korean military will maintain the capability and posture to respond overwhelmingly to any provocation while closely monitoring all North Korean activities.”
