: Japanese automaker Nissan Motor Co said on Tuesday it has suspended development plans for two battery-powered sedans while it expands its U.S. electric vehicle lineup to five models.
“We are adjusting the launch schedule of these five new models to ensure we bring the vehicles to market at the right time,” a Nissan spokesman told Reuters.
The company’s new product lineup for the U.S. also includes battery-powered crossover SUVs.
While Nissan’s electric sedan is still on its production schedule, the company expects SUVs to be rolled out faster than sedans.
The company also said its Canton, Mississippi, plant will support manufacturing of its next-generation vehicles.
The news comes as weaker-than-expected demand for electric vehicles has prompted global automakers to abandon ambitious electrification plans and instead focus on hybrid and gasoline-powered models.
Additionally, demand for crossover SUVs and pickup trucks has outpaced sedans and other models over the past few years as Americans prefer the convenience these platforms offer.
In March this year, Nissan laid out plans to accelerate the global electric vehicle transformation, including selling seven new models in the United States by 2026 and establishing an electric vehicle manufacturing center in the United States.
Automotive News first reported that Nissan has suspended U.S. production plans for its first next-generation electric vehicle.
