According to the Niger News Agency (ANP), the Tilia region of Niger recorded heavy rains from August 12 to 13, 2024. The floods killed more than 50 people.
The agency noted that two passenger vehicles coming from Tawa to attend the weekly Telemces market entered Kori in Galin Ali (70 km north of Tawa).
“The water level of the Kori River is very high. It is fed by the valley. According to local sources, provisional reports indicate 52 dead and several missing. The force of the water swept away two vehicles despite the resistance of the passengers,” we can read in the column of the ANP.
The search for other bodies was continuing but the site was inaccessible because water was still flowing, according to sources cited by the agency.
“The defence and security forces, in particular the gendarmerie and the National Guard, are working to reach the site and provide assistance to the missing persons.”
According to the ANP, most of the victims were traders from Tahoua town, Taza village and Ikawane village. There were also Nigerians there.
As a reminder, the Nigerien authorities provided a flood report on August 9, 2024, showing 94 deaths and 93 injuries. “As of August 7, 2024, we have unfortunately recorded 94 deaths, 44 of which were due to drowning and 50 due to the collapse of houses,” said Aissa Laouan Wandarma, Minister of Humanitarian Action and Disaster Management.
