KOROR, Palau – A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held to celebrate the opening of a new facility at the Palau National Aquaculture Center (PNAC) in Koror on June 13, 2024. The project, funded by Taiwan, aims to strengthen Palau’s aquaculture industry and contribute to food security, economic opportunities, and sustainability of marine resources.
Strengthening aquaculture development capabilities
The new facility includes a microalgae culture room, fish feed storage room, fish fry rearing ponds and milkfish broodstock ponds. These advances will provide a controlled environment for rearing fish fry and cultivating essential food sources for aquaculture.
Collaborating for a sustainable future
Taiwan’s Ambassador to Palau, Jiexi Li, highlighted the ongoing partnership between the two countries. In addition to improving infrastructure, Taiwan provides technical assistance to promote aquaculture in local communities. This collaborative effort strengthens food security, biodiversity conservation, and economic prospects.
Sustainable fishing practices
Palau President Soulanger Whipps stressed the importance of balancing resource use with conservation. The recent expansion of designated fishing areas is expected to increase demand for baitfish. The new PNAC facility will play a key role in meeting this demand through sustainable aquaculture practices.
Collaboration is the key to success
Palau’s Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Environment Steven Victor thanked Taiwan for its continued support and praised the collaboration between the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Environment (MAFE), the Taiwan Technical Mission (TTM), state governments, educational institutions, and the private sector to move Palau’s aquaculture industry forward.
The ceremony concluded with a tour of the new facility, where TTM personnel presented the future goals of the project and the potential of the new infrastructure. The successful farming of rabbit fish and sea cucumbers demonstrated the positive impact this initiative will have on Palau’s aquaculture industry.
