Next up are the Paralympics, which will be held from August 28 to September 8.
“We are also very proud of our disabled athletes who have overcome tremendous obstacles to excel in their respective sports,” Mr Wong said.
Some of the Singapore team’s athletes, including Med, badminton player Yeoh Ka Ming and sailor Ryan Lo, were invited to attend the rally at the Institute of Technical Education (ITE) headquarters in Ang Mo Kio.
He said Singapore will take more measures to strengthen its sports culture.
One way is through the Presidential Challenge to further “mobilize” communities to work with government to develop sports talent, including from disadvantaged groups.
“I am happy to see more and more young Singaporeans with sporting talent taking up sports seriously and excelling at the highest level. People’s mindsets are changing,” said Mr Wong.
“In the past, parents were not so sure whether their children should pursue sports as a career. Now we see more successful role models. … With government support, more and more young athletes are taking sports seriously and training full-time.”
