A 26-year-old woman was allegedly killed by a 30-year-old man, believed to be her lover, and later committed suicide on a railway track in Raipur, police said on Sunday citing preliminary investigation findings.

The body of Vani Goyal was found in a hotel room while Vishal Garg (30) collapsed on the tracks near Ulkura railway station earlier in the day.

An official said Goyal’s family, a resident of Saraswati police station area, lodged a missing report on Saturday following which the police launched a search.

“The location of Goyal’s mobile phone was traced in Nagpur in neighbouring Maharashtra following which a police team reached there. The police found her mobile phone but could not find her,” he said.

Meanwhile, Garg’s body was found on the railway tracks near Ulkura railway station within the jurisdiction of Kantara police station.

Garg is a resident of Ambikapur municipality in Surguja district.

Later, the police received information that Goyal was found dead on the floor of a room at Babylon Hotel in the Jail Road area of ​​Raipur.

He said preliminary investigations showed that the woman was beaten and strangled to death and the exact cause of death would be determined in the autopsy report.

Documents and CCTV footage show that the two checked into the hotel around 1:30 pm on Saturday.

“Preliminary investigation revealed that Garg allegedly murdered the woman and then committed suicide. However, investigation into the case is ongoing,” he added.
