As part of measures to streamline traffic, police maintain vigil at key locations
Mumbai traffic police issued electronic fines of over Rs 1 crore for traffic violations on India’s Independence Day, a police officer said on Tuesday.
Police maintained vigil at major locations to streamline traffic. Fines were issued for several situations including riding a bicycle without a helmet, travelling in a three-seater and driving in prohibited areas.
2,791 motorcyclists (including drivers and pillion passengers) were fined Rs 21 lakh for not wearing helmets. 993 people were fined Rs 844,500 for running red lights while riding motorcycles or vehicles. 290 people were fined Rs 243,000 for riding three-seater motorcycles, officials said.
Other traffic violations include abandoning or parking vehicles in public places and overloading with passengers. Car drivers were fined for refusing to pick up passengers.
About 85 drivers were fined for not complying with police orders.
“A total of 13,146 tickets were issued to drivers with a fine of Rs 1,05,68,250,” the official added.
