Kabul (Pajhwok): Construction of the Paratuni Dam in southeastern Pakistan’s Paktia province began on Monday. The project, which will take two and a half years to complete, will irrigate 2,500 hectares of land and generate 935 kilowatts of electricity.
Deputy Prime Minister for Economic Affairs Mullah Abdulghani Baradar Akhund attended the groundbreaking ceremony of the Paratuni Dam in Paktia province.
The Palatuni Dam will have a water storage capacity of approximately 25 million cubic meters, will irrigate 2,500 hectares of land and generate 935 kilowatts of electricity. The project is expected to be completed in two and a half years.
The project, funded by the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan (IEA) and supervised by the National Development Corporation, will create direct and indirect jobs for hundreds of citizens, a statement from the Deputy Prime Minister’s Office said.
Once completed, the dam will enhance groundwater reserves in nearby areas, irrigate farmland, control floods, and help protect the environment.
During the inauguration ceremony, Maulana Baradar stressed the importance of agriculture to a strong economy and noted that water is a key element in agricultural development.
He said at the inauguration ceremony that the IEA attaches great importance to water resources management and encourages investment in this area.
He stressed that the IEA is committed to managing natural resources to achieve self-sufficiency and socio-economic development and welcomes domestic and foreign investors to invest in this area.
Barada also said that the IEA reviewed large and medium dams across the country and identified those that were not completed or had not yet started. Comprehensive work plans have been prepared to advance these projects and actual work has begun on many projects, including the Palatuni Dam.
Mullah Baradar acknowledged the sacrifices made by the people of Paktika to reestablish the Islamic system.
He stressed that it is the government’s responsibility to address their problems and complete projects that can alleviate their economic challenges.
He assured that resources would be committed to ensure the completion of the Palatuni Dam and urged the contracting company to execute its task with dedication and integrity.
