Local marathon runner Kamohelo Mofolo put in a strong performance to win the Absa Run Your City Tswane 10km race in Gauteng, South Africa on Sunday.

The 24-year-old promising runner won her first race in 28 minutes 40 seconds and took home £30,000 in prize money.

Mofulo not only won the title but also broke the event record of 29:12 set by South African Kabelo Mulaudzi when he won at the same event on August 27, 2023.

Mofulo beat Kenya’s Gideon Kipgnetic, who finished second in 28:42, and defending champion Mulaudzi, who finished third in 28:52.

This was Mofulo’s first major victory in South Africa and he said the victory was the result of hard work.

Mofulo toldlesotho timesImmediately after his win on Sunday, he said he still enjoyed the competition despite the stiff competition.

However, he said Lesotho’s challenging mountain training routes had prepared him for victory.

“Although it wasn’t an easy match, I’m happy to have gotten the win. The competition was tough but I enjoyed it,” Mofolo said.

“The route worked in my favour because I train on the hills of Lesotho. So, my body is used to going up and downhill in training and that’s why I ran so well. I didn’t struggle at all.”

Mofolo runs on behalf of the Maxed Elite running club, whose coach is American James McKirdy.

Meanwhile, the Absa Run Your City Tswane 10km women’s title was won by South African 10km champion Glenrose Xaba, who completed the race in an amazing time of 31:51.

Mokulubete Makatisi of Lesotho finished second in 32:58, while her compatriot ‘Neheng Khathala took the final podium spot (third) in 33:35.
