Kathmandu, August 11. The Narendra Modi-led government was criticized after a statue of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj was blown down by wind at Rajkotgadi in Sindhudurg district in Maharashtra, India.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi unveiled the statue on the occasion of Navy Day on December 4, 2023. The statue was built and installed by the Indian Navy and is 35 feet tall. Less than a year after the statue collapsed and broke into pieces, opposition parties have begun questioning its quality and Modi’s hasty unveiling.
Congress accused the BJP-led government of corruption on the social network X. “There is extreme corruption in the BJP government,” the Congress wrote. “About 8 months later, the statue of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj came down. Such is the situation, when corruption strikes, even great men are not immune.”
The Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray-led Shiv Sena Vaibhav Naik demanded an inquiry into the incident and strict action against the culprits.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde said the statue collapsed due to winds of 45 kmph. He called it unfortunate and said the statue of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj will be rebuilt at that spot.
