Mircea Grabovschi, the 1974 world champion and 1976 Olympic vice-champion, has died at the age of 71, his hometown club CSM Sighisoara announced.

“It is a painful loss for the world handball and the Sighişoara community. Handball legend Mircea Grabovschi has left us at the age of 71. His contribution to the sport was extraordinary, becoming world champion in 1974 and vice-champion of the Olympics in 1976. In moments like this, we remember his achievements and the impact he had on the sports world. Mircea Grabovschi was a true ambassador of Romanian handball and his memory will always live in the hearts of those who knew and admired him. May God rest in peace!”, relayed CSM Sighişoara on Tuesday evening.

Mircea Grabovschi was born in Sighisoara on December 22, 1952. He played on the right wing and the far right wing for Inter Milan, won the national championship with Dinamo Bucharest and won the Romanian Cup with the team.

He was a member of the Romanian national team that won the world championship in Germany in 1974 and the silver medal at the 1976 Olympics in Montreal.

For his exceptional athletic achievements, he was awarded the title of Honorary Master of Sports. On February 26, 2009, he was awarded the title of “Honorary Citizen” in his hometown of Sighişoara, according to News.ro.
