MIRAMAR, FL – The City of Miramar, in partnership with Commissioner Maxwell B. Chambers, celebrates Trinidad’s 62nd Independence Day on Saturday, August 31, 2024. The event marks more than six decades of Trinidadian sovereignty while also celebrating the island’s rich cultural heritage, significant contributions to the global community, and the vibrant spirit of the Trinidadian diaspora in Miramar. The celebration is a reminder that freedom, unity, and cultural pride have been enduring values ​​for Trinidad since independence.

On August 31, 1962, Trinidad and Tobago gained independence from the United Kingdom under the Trinidad and Tobago Independence Act 1962. The Act granted the West Indian nation full independence within the Commonwealth, with Queen Elizabeth II as the titular head of state. On the same day, the United States recognized Trinidad and Tobago’s independence and established diplomatic relations with the country.
