Final countdown: Residency violators have only 8 days to correct their status

KUWAIT CITY, June 8: With only eight days left until the June 17 deadline for residency violators to correct their status, the Ministry of Interior is stepping up efforts to help violators comply. In the past two months, the ministry has processed an average of 1,000 violators per day in six governorates and two additional centers in Mubarak Al-Kabeer and Al-Raqi, Al-Rai newspaper reported.

Brigadier General Maziad Mutairi, Assistant Director General of the General Directorate of Residency Affairs, stressed that this correction period, initiated by First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defense and Interior Sheikh Fahad Yusuf, is a humanitarian initiative. The three-month window from March 17 to June 17 provides a crucial opportunity for violators to comply. After the deadline, a comprehensive security plan will be implemented to arrest violators and those who harbour them, and strict measures will be implemented to control and deport them.

During a recent visit to the Al-Dajeej Residency Affairs Authority building, Brigadier General Al-Mutairi discussed measures taken to promote compliance. Six departments are operational in the morning, and two centers in Mubarak Al-Kabeer and Al-Raqi are open in the evening to process changes of status and immediate departure. Violators without passports can obtain the necessary documents from their embassies, which have collaborated to simplify these procedures.

As the deadline approaches, Brigadier General Al-Mutairi outlined the post-deadline security plan. An extensive campaign will be carried out in all governorates and businesses employing illegal workers. Violators will be detained, investigated and deported, and banned from entering Kuwait and the GCC countries for life under the security agreement. The ministry stressed that violators pose a threat to national security and often resort to criminal activities.

Offenders have a unique opportunity to leave or adjust their status without paying a fine, but must settle any outstanding debts to government agencies, companies or individuals. The initiative aims to remove barriers for offenders, with designated centers open both in the morning and evening to facilitate the process.

Currently, about 1,000 violators enter the centers every day, a number that is expected to increase as the deadline approaches. The ministry will continue operations during the upcoming Eid al-Fitr holidays to accommodate last-minute compliance requests.

Brigadier General Al-Mutairi confirmed that there are no plans to extend the deadline beyond June 17. Currently, there is a large number of participants, mainly Asian and African men. The streamlined process takes less than 10 minutes, highlighting the urgency and importance of compliance.

This deadline is a critical opportunity for violators to adjust their status or leave Kuwait without facing legal consequences. After the deadline, violators face severe enforcement measures, including lifetime bans and deportation. The Ministry has security teams in all governorates to ensure strict enforcement.

Challenges include the lack of a database of offenders with children, which raises security concerns. However, the embassy has cooperated in issuing travel documents to facilitate the departure of offenders and their families.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs urged all offenders to seize the opportunity to correct their status or leave the country promptly to ensure compliance with Kuwaiti laws and maintain national security.
