Government officials from 27 countries decided this morning in Brussels that the controversial Nature Recovery Law will be discussed by ministers at the Environment Council on Monday (June 17) rather than being put to a vote as tentatively planned.

The move suggests there is still not enough support from national governments to enshrine the text into EU law.

The European Council has reached a compromise text with the European Parliament in 2023.

EU ministers were due to vote in March to enact the proposal into EU law, but the vote was put on hold after Hungary withdrew its support, leaving the proposal without enough support in the EU Council.

Poland and Slovakia subsequently said they would no longer vote in favor of the proposal.

In May, 11 countries, led by Ireland, Urge other countries to support the proposalHowever, several officials confirmed to Euractiv that the law still lacks sufficient support from governments.

Procedurally, the law is still likely to be voted on after discussion.
