July 15, Gulmi. At present, farmers in the district are busy planting millet. From June to the end of July, farmers plant millet in corn fields. Recently, the area planted with millet in the district has been decreasing.
The area under millet cultivation in the district is also decreasing year by year. Navraj Bhandari, director of Krishi Gyankendra Gulmi, said that last year, millet was cultivated on 2,881 hectares of land and the output was 3,341.96 tonnes.
Earlier, the area produced 3,000 tonnes of 776.5 tonnes in 200905. Gyan Kendra village chief Bhandari said that due to the recent increase in migration, young people leaving the village and difficulties in growing millet, people’s attraction to millet has declined.
According to Gian Kendra, the area under millet cultivation has been reduced due to drought during sowing, low germination rate and the occurrence of diseases. Farmers said that wild animals, wild goats, rabbits, mice and other animals have caused damage to millet cultivation.
Okhle 1, Dalle 1 and local varieties of millets are mainly used in this region. The major pocket areas are Isma, Madane, Malika, Dhurkot, Kaligandaki, Chandrakot.
Millet is Nepal’s fourth most important food crop after rice, corn and wheat, and farmers say that keeping millet in place for a long time is important for food security.
