While the attack caused the outage, it was not the primary cause, and Microsoft said the outage was exacerbated by the company’s own data security systems.
“Our initial observations suggest that, rather than mitigating the impact of the attack, errors in our protection implementation may have exacerbated it,” Microsoft said in a statement.
The company said it plans to release a more detailed report on the data outage. Microsoft will release a preliminary report in the coming days and a final report within two weeks.
