Girona coach Michel said on Friday he was sad that it was difficult for his team to repeat the results at the end of the season, which saw them finish third in the league, the best result in their history, and qualify for the Champions League for the first time.
In front of a cheering home crowd, the Catalans ended their campaign with a 7-0 win over Granada, finishing with 81 points, a total only Real Madrid, Atletico Madrid and Barcelona have managed in the current league format.
But Michel knows that Girona, who will only be promoted to the top flight in 2022, will have to work hard to repeat the record next season.
Michel told reporters: “I feel a little disappointed because the good times are over. We have achieved very important results and every day this season has been wonderful.”
“The counter starts to go down to zero. We will start to fight for the great season that is coming and that is what we are going to do from tomorrow.
“We are growing and we have to keep moving forward. We have to lay the first foundation stone, rest, recover, celebrate this big success and, from next week, start planning to get Girona as high up in the standings as possible.”
There was a carnival atmosphere at the Estadio Montilivi, with fireworks displays and concerts, while the Spanish manager was already thinking about the changes that need to be implemented in the off-season as several players are expected to leave the club.
“The dynamics of football tell you it’s not going to be the same players, it’s not going to be the same season, the problem is there are going to be a lot of absences,” he said.
