Sage Geosystems developed and tested its ggs system (geopressure geothermal system), which differs from typical forms of geothermal energy production.
What is revolutionary about the technology, according to the company, is that the system can be implemented almost anywhere, using proven technology that is familiar in the oil field.
The two companies have planned a production capacity of 150 MW.
Heat from the Earth’s core
Geothermal energy is a low-emission form of energy production that has so far been produced mainly in volcanic areas such as Iceland.
Geothermal energy can be generated by harnessing the heat from hot springs or by drilling a deep enough hole into the bedrock.
According to Sage Geosystems, the new old technology can be relatively easily implemented and scalable for production. The company hopes to reach depths where temperatures range from around 100 to 250 degrees Celsius.
Sage Geosystems’ first commercial three-megawatt facility is being built in Texas.

The company, which grew out of MIT research, promises that the new technology will allow it to drill as deep as 20 kilometers. Never before has a geothermal energy production project been drilled that deep.
