Last April, residents of the coastal town of Binibecaville in Menorca decided to allow tourists into their village during… a few hours. In particular, they decided to keep out “strangers” before 11 a.m. and after 8 p.m.
The reason? The village was irritated by tourists entering their backyard, making loud noises and trying to find the perfect spot to take an Instagram photo, leading them to declare “tourist time.”
Binibeca Vel is a picturesque seaside village on the Balearic island of Menorca. Built in the 60s by Catalan architect Francisco Juan Barba Corsini, it has become one of the favorite destinations for travelers over the years. It is estimated that about 800,000 tourists visit it every year, and the British call Binibeca Vela the “Spanish Mykonos”.

However, despite the busy schedule, permanent residents of Binibeka Vel have not been able to find peace even this summer. They recently posted photos on social media where tourists can be seen climbing onto the balconies of houses, jumping into yards and climbing private staircases in search of the best photo spots.
So on Friday, August 16, the village’s permanent residents will vote on whether a complete ban on visitors is needed.

However, the move has sparked a reaction – mainly from businessmen in the region, who argue that such a ban would be disastrous for their jobs and finances.
However, the entire island of Menorca seems to be facing similar problems with tourists. A few weeks ago, locals “occupied” a beach and used their bodies to form the slogan “SOS Menorca” in the hope of protesting against overtourism.
