Lilongwe, August 9 (Xinhua) — The Malawi Congress Party (MCP) has elected a new National Executive Committee (NEC) leadership with Chairman Dr. Lazarus Chakwera assuming the top leadership post of the party.
Malawi Congress Party members cheered and sang victory songs as votes were counted and results were announced, eagerly awaiting the fate of their party’s candidates.
Notable figures who were offered positions in the National Executive Committee include current Speaker of Parliament Catherine Gotani Hara, who was appointed as the first vice-president of the MCP.
The first deputy speaker of Parliament, Madalitso Kazombo, also won the post of recruitment director without any suspense.
The post of party secretary general is held by the current Minister of Local Government, Unity and Culture, Richard Chimwendo Banda, popularly known as “The Bulldozer”.

John Paul was chosen as the party’s treasurer while Jessica Kabwila was chosen by the delegates as the party’s publicity secretary.
The delegates also appointed Jean Sendeza as Director of Women’s Affairs and Baba Steve Malondela as Director of Youth Affairs.
Jivason George Kadzipatike has been appointed as Director of Legal Affairs and Elias Chakwera will be Director of Elections.

In addition, the delegates also appointed current Agriculture Minister Sam Kawale as Director of Public Relations.
The theme of the Malawi Congress Party’s 2024 electoral conference is “Rebuilding the Malawi Nation”, which reflects the party’s major master plan to develop the country.
