Just days ago, Mayor Earl Trapp called for Patrick Faber to be expelled from the UDP, but he later withdrew that request and confirmed that he had changed his mind. Today, he called not for Faber’s expulsion, but for unity at the National Party Council meeting scheduled for tomorrow. Trapp sent a letter just last Friday calling for Patrick Faber’s expulsion after Faber posted on Facebook that he hoped Shyne Barrow would no longer be party leader. Trapp had previously stated that he wanted Faber expelled, but on Wednesday, Trapp walked back that decision. The move came two days before the UDP National Council meeting, where it became apparent that there was an attempt to oust Barrow, raising concerns that Trapp’s move had ulterior motives. However, he said both letters were meant to bring unity within the UDP. Trapp spoke to Love News about recent developments and why he wants Faber expelled.
Count Trapp, Mayor of San Ignacio/St. Helena: “I used this opportunity to reach out to all the leaders and have them reflect and say, you know what, we can’t go on like this. I think that the revocation letter that I sent out was basically just to say that we need each other. We have thousands of supporters who have been supporting us. Thousands of supporters are suffering and we can’t continue to bicker among ourselves and forget about the poor people who have been supporting us. So that was the message that I was trying to get across to my colleagues, we can’t be selfish. We can’t continue to have crab bucket syndrome or blue concas syndrome. We have to care about each other and if we can learn to bicker among ourselves and ultimately put our differences behind us for the best interest of the people, for the best interest of the party, for the best interest of the country, then I believe that’s what we need. So I was just trying to get the message across that we have to do more in terms of caring for our party and our people. I believe and I hope that they will respond appropriately to that message and I hope that tomorrow we can find an amicable solution and move forward.”
Trapp told the UDP president that he had received calls and text messages from several UDP members asking him to stop recalling Freed. Our newsroom asked him if that meant he was forced to withdraw the letter.
Count Trapp, Mayor of San Ignacio/St. Helena: “People always try to tarnish a person’s character because after that, somebody asked me how much they paid me to send that letter. Oh my god, nobody, I wouldn’t do it. But one of the reasons, and I’ll tell you too, I quoted it in the letter, in the retraction letter, was because I got a lot of calls from UDP supporters who thought that this could have been handled differently without even considering removing Mr. Faber. You know, they also said, remember I support Mr. Faber as well, I like him, and if you continue like this, you no longer have our support. I think that was another factor that prompted me to send the letter. Not just one, but a lot of people called, texted me, and they were concerned, I don’t like Mr. Faber, you want to remove Mr. Faber, he’s been there for a long time, you know? I believe that, I believe that was the case. I think, I mean, we’re all human and we make mistakes, and I think we have to find the right way to handle the situation before we react to something. We have to digest it properly and see how it affects us as a people, how it affects us as a party, and then we can make the most informed decision. So yes, from that perspective, I had to respond and retract it because many of the UDP Supporters were so worried about me writing this letter. So I had to do it.”
Trapp also recently supported a proposal to replace John Saldivar as the UDP’s western regional leader, but Saldivar resigned before the matter could be discussed.
