Mayiladuthurai MP R. Sudha appealed to Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw to bring a charter of demands on behalf of the people of her constituency.
Residents of Mayiladuthurai, Sirkazhi and Gumbakonam have repeatedly called for various improvements in the railway services and infrastructure in their areas.
The petition highlights the need for additional coaches in the MEMU trains (16811, 16812, 16833 and 16834) running from Mayiladuthurai to Salem and Tiruchi, as the number of coaches in these trains has been reduced to eight, leading to severe overcrowding in the coaches. The petition seeks to add four non-reserved coaches in these trains.
She called for extension of train routes, especially extension of trains (06692, 00690, 06694) from Mayiladuthurai to Villupuram and trains (06689, 06690) from Tiruvarur to Villupuram till Chennaitambalam.
The MP demanded the launch of new train services, including a direct train from Mayiladuthurai to Kalakudi and another train service from Mayiladuthurai to Palani. He advocated the launch of inter-city express trains with seating facilities between Mayiladuthurai and Chennai, which would be operated during daytime hours.
There is an urgent need to expedite the construction of the flyover sanctioned in 2017 to ease the severe traffic congestion caused by the Mappadugai and Neidur railway gates, especially in the mornings and evenings. Ms. Sudha called for the resumption of train services between Mayiladuthurai and Tarangambadi, which was discontinued in 1990, by converting it into a double track and extending it to Karaikal.
