Commentators have no doubt that this is a positive decision for Europe, Portugal, António Costa and Montenegro itself. He said that the position suits the former prime minister’s abilities, namely his negotiating skills.
Luis Marques Mendes believes that the choice of Antonio Costa as President of the European Council is “a good decision for Europe”.
In his usual comments to SIC on Sunday, Marques Mendes stressed that “there are moments in life when everyone wins and no one loses”, assuring that “this is one of them”.
The problem is the position of “negotiation, dialogue” and, therefore, fits in with “Antonio Costa’s general image”. According to the political commentator, this is because he is “a man of dialogue and negotiation skills”.
It was also a good decision for Portugal, as a country of this size “always gains a boost in prestige, reputation and credibility” when the Portuguese are in a “high international position.”
At the same time, this is a good decision for Montenegro, which, on the one hand, supports Costa’s campaign “with great conviction and enthusiasm”, and on the other hand, there is one more Portuguese at the European Council meetings. This situation makes Costa a “good interlocutor” for the Prime Minister.
Finally, “it’s good for Antonio Costa” because he has wanted the position “for many years”. Even so, Max Mendes warned that it will be “a very difficult period” after the US elections when Costa takes office in early December.
Who benefits from the fall of the government?
Max Mendes analyzed that “the political crisis that began last November was a good thing for several protagonists”
“Without this crisis, it would have been almost impossible for him (Costa) to hold the presidency of the European Council.” At the same time, the situation is also beneficial to Montenegro, as Montenegro “will not be able to obtain the prime ministership soon or even eventually.”
Besides that, the fall of the government was also positive for Pedro Nuno Santos, since he “would not have become leader of the Socialist Party so quickly without this crisis”. Max Mendes has not forgotten Andrés Ventura, who, he said, “benefited from early elections with a very good result”.
A new contract of justice
Everything indicates that the government and the Socialists have reached an agreement to create a new pact for Portuguese justice. Luis Marcos Mendes stressed that to carry out the reforms, “first of all, ensure that DCIAP investigations are free from interference from politics and politicians”, especially in order to control or limit the process.
The commentator said it was also important to “ensure that criminal investigations are conducted with greater efficiency and speed, without abuse of power, without agenda, and with strong leadership within the public ministry,” noting that “all that has not happened yet.”
“Finally, it is necessary to guarantee that freedom of information is respected”, in the sense that cases of violation of judicial secrecy are not the “fault” of journalists, but the “fault” of those who pass information abroad. “The prosecutor’s office, the police, lawyers…”, he gave as examples.
