Japanese player Hideki Matsuyama and his team were robbed on their way to London, the first stop of the PGA Tour playoffs, after winning the bronze medal at the Paris Olympics, Japanese media reported on Wednesday.
The former Masters champion told Golf Digest Japan that his wallet was stolen and the passports and visas of caddie Shota Hayato and coach Mikihito Kuromiya were taken.
Matsuyama, ranked 12th in the world, told the website that Hayato and Kuromiya have returned to Japan and are working to regain their documents.
The earliest they can travel to the United States is for the season-ending Tour Championship from August 29 to September 1.
“They have a chance to make it to the final, but we have to make that possibility as close to zero as possible,” Matsuyama told Golf Digest.
Representatives for Matsuyama and the PGA Tour did not immediately respond to Reuters when asked to confirm reports of the robbery.
Matsuyama won Japan’s first medal in the men’s golf event at the Paris Olympics.
Videos online showed Matsuyama warming up at TPC Southwind Golf Club in Memphis, where he plans to play the opening two rounds on Thursday and Friday.
The top 50 players will advance to the BMW Championship in Castle Rock, Colo., Aug. 22-25, and the top 30 will advance to the Tour Championship at East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta.
