Police from the Anti-Drugs and Transnational Organised Crime Unit arrested businesswoman Nancy Kigunzu, also known as Mathee wa Ngara, over the weekend.

The arrest came less than a year after DCI detectives seized more than 100 kilograms of marijuana in a gated compound in Ngara, Nairobi County. This time, Kigunzu was allegedly found with an undisclosed amount of marijuana in an apartment in Juja.

Police suspect that the apartment where Georgina was arrested in Kigunzu was her property. They believe she moved from Ngara to Juja and was running drug trafficking operations from two units in the building.

During the search, which lasted more than 12 hours, police seized six bags of marijuana, four cars and a motorcycle, which were towed to Juja police station for further investigation.

In addition, two other suspects, David Ochieng Okoth and Christopher Odipo, were arrested in the operation.

Kigunzu, Okos and Odipo faced charges in court on Monday. All three pleaded not guilty to trafficking 189,300 grams of marijuana, valued at more than 5.6 million Kenyan shillings. They also face a second charge of conspiracy to traffic in narcotic drugs.

The prosecution refused bail to both men on the grounds of flight risk and lack of fixed abode. The court also heard that Kigongzu had previously committed similar crimes.

Kigunzu, through her lawyer, Danstan Omari, however, challenged the prosecution’s stance, claiming the offence was bailable and that she would not abscond.

The court has directed the Probation Officer to prepare a report and fixed August 19, 2024 for filing of the report in the case.

Kigunzu’s most recent arrest followed an incident in August 2023, when police seized 100 kilograms of marijuana from her base in Ngara. During that raid, authorities also seized 13.4 million Kenyan shillings, which the court later ordered to be forfeited and handed over to the state.

Kigunzu was subsequently released on cash bail of Ksh1 million in December 2023.
