Many Democrats quickly endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris as the party’s presidential candidate to challenge Donald Trump on Sunday, following the incumbent’s Joe Biden suddenly drops out of the raceBut some powerful party members, including former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, have remained silent.
After weeks of debate among Democrats over whether Biden, 81, should remain in the race, with just over 100 days left until the November election, it will be crucial for Harris to gain a significant amount of support if she is to become the nominee.
But there are many doubts within the Democratic Party about whether Harris can defeat Republican candidate and former President Trump. Some Democrats have suggested that the Democratic Party should hold a small primary before the August convention.
Biden himself endorsed Harris in a separate statement on Sunday after saying in a letter that he would resign. That was followed by endorsements from the powerful Congressional Black Caucus, several key donors, multiple lawmakers and super PACs including America First and Unite the Nation.
“Today, I am giving my full support and endorsement to Kamala as our Democratic nominee this year,” Biden said on social media platform X. “Democrats — it’s time to unite and defeat Trump. Let’s do this together.”
The list of Democratic lawmakers endorsing Harris has grown over time. As of Sunday evening, the list included California Gov. Gavin Newsom, Colorado Gov. Jared Polis, North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper, Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro, Arizona U.S. Sen. Mark Kelly, Washington U.S. Sen. Patty Murray, South Carolina U.S. Rep. James Clyburn and Massachusetts U.S. Rep. Pramila Jayapal.
Dmitri Mehlhorn, an adviser to LinkedIn founder and major Democratic donor Reid Hoffman, called Harris the “embodiment of the American dream,” noting that she is the daughter of immigrants. “She is also the embodiment of tenacity, having risen from my hometown of Oakland, California, to become the state’s top prosecutor. With Scranton Joe out of office, I can’t wait to help get Harris elected president.”
Reuters quoted multiple sources on Sunday as saying that all 50 Democratic state chairmen will support Harris as the party’s new presidential candidate.
Former U.S. President Bill Clinton and Hillary Clinton, who served as secretary of state under President Barack Obama, also endorsed Harris in a statement.
