A 23-year-old man has been charged with assaulting his wife in an incident that occurred on the evening of May 30, 2024.
The man was charged with two offences, including:
Count 1: Domestic Violence – a Class ‘B’ Misdemeanor punishable by up to six (6) months imprisonment, or a fine of up to $150 and $500; or both.
Count 2: Assault in the Second Degree – a Class “C” felony punishable by not more than seven (7) years in prison, or a fine of $150 to $5,000; or both.
According to government records, a mother went to Tafuna Police Station on the evening of May 30 to file a complaint alleging that her husband had difficulty breathing due to work that morning.
The mother stated that she saw that her husband was upset by his not engaging with her comments, and his reactions to her (male). The mother explained that his wife had talked about a man who lived with them, and the mother told her that nothing was going on between her and that man.
However, the mother said her husband dragged her from the room to the bathroom, locked the door, and then began to strangle her until she passed out. When he returned, he saw his wife holding him against the concrete wall of the house before he fell and hit his forehead on the floor of the house.
The mother said her husband walked out and locked the bathroom door and windows so that no one else could hear what was happening.
The mother also explained how her husband came back into the bathroom and began to strangle her, saying he could kill her if he wanted to, but the mother begged him to stop.
Police witnessed injuries to the mother’s neck and forehead.
That evening, the man went to the police station and was informed of his legal rights.
The defendant stated to the police that the accident was a matter between him and his wife and he did not want to explain it to the police.
The defendant did not deny his wife’s testimony against him until he tried to prove to the police what he had done in both his lives and his urge to leave his wife.
The defendant was ordered to post $15,000 bail to remain out of jail while awaiting trial.
