The man allegedly strangled the victim and stole her necklace and earrings before escaping by locking the apartment from outside, police officials said, adding that investigation is ongoing
Police have arrested a man in Dombivli in the district on suspicion of killing a 65-year-old woman and stealing her jewellery to pay off a debt owed from online cricket betting, an official said on Saturday.
Asha Arvind Raikar, a resident of Koppal area, was found strangled to death in his apartment on Friday, said Sachin Gunjal, deputy commissioner of police (Zone III).
CCTV footage showed Satish Vichal (28), a resident of the same building, entering her flat on Thursday afternoon.
During interrogation, he allegedly told police that he was addicted to online cricket betting and owed a debt of Rs 60,000.
Vichare told police that he decided to rob the woman in order to get money.
After strangling Rajka, he allegedly stole her necklace and earrings before locking the apartment from outside and escaping, police officials said, adding that investigation is underway.
