North Macedonia’s parliament voted on Sunday evening to elect a new government led by VMRO-DPMNE party leader Hristijan Mickoski after winning the May 8 election.
The new government is committed to making substantial reforms to the economy and fighting corruption – promises the opposition says are manipulative and unnecessary.
Deputies voted 77 in favor to 22 against for a new government that will have 23 ministers, five of whom will also serve as deputy prime ministers.
In a speech before the parliamentary vote, Mikowski said that “citizens are tired of arguing” and they want “jobs, dedication, responsibility and concrete steps.”
“In the first 100 days, we will raise the bar, we will work hard, and the country will change”Mikoski said there were promises of tax cuts, pension increases, 250 million euros worth of projects for municipalities, new investments and the fight against corruption.
The government cabinet will consist of 16 ministers from the VMRO DPMNE-led coalition, six ministers from the VLEN coalition and two ministers from the ZNAM party.
Oath of Allegiance to the Constitution
After the government vote, Mikoski and his ministers took a solemn oath, and in a departure from previous moves, he referred to the country’s constitutional name, “North Macedonia”.
“I will mention this shameful last name when I take the oath of office because it reminds me of the shame inflicted on my hometown, my family, and my unborn grandchildren. As long as I live, I will do everything I can to correct this injustice. Unfortunately, I no longer have the power to do so.”” Mikowski said.
He also spoke of the need to approve constitutional changes, avoid a Bulgarian veto, and continue taking steps toward joining the European Union.
The constitutional amendment currently under consideration by the North Macedonian Parliament provides for the inclusion of the Bulgarian minority as a founding nation in the preamble of the constitution.
“In this case, the Bulgarian directive will not be passed and the constitution will not be changed, so I will be here.” Mikowski said.
Parliament debated the new government for two days and had a midnight deadline on Sunday to vote./relatively
