Each won $7.2 million in the must-win drawing on June 8, including a couple who claimed their prize just last week.
“Because we don’t buy lottery tickets very often, we usually only check our tickets when we remember – we’re not in a rush,” the winning man said.
A few weeks later, the man remembered the ticket, which had been placed in his wife’s handbag for safekeeping, and dug it out and scanned it using the MyLotto app.
“The app told me I had won the jackpot and asked me to take the ticket to Lotto store. I’m not sure how much I won… but I have a feeling it was a lot.”
The man hid the tickets back in his wife’s handbag so that she could check them the next day when she went shopping.
Before shopping, they took the winning ticket to Lotto counter.
“They told us we had won $7 million — we were so excited,” he said.
Since then, other Powerball jackpot winners have included $4.5 million won by a MyLotto player in Waikato on June 12, and $5.5 million won by a physical ticket purchased in Waitara on June 19.
