What everyone wanted to see at the race, what they most anticipated, what needed no introduction and whose arrival almost everyone celebrated, was the main absentee from the first race of the 2024 Apertura Championship.
Puntarenas faced Liberia, but they didn’t score. More than one person in the stands called for a goal, but the goal didn’t want to appear, and in the end, Buenos Aires and Liberia drew 0-0.
As the game progressed, both teams were competing for the goal and the players’ dedication was outstanding, but the lack of presence in the penalty area created dangers for the goalkeeper, especially in the first half.
Puntarenas was the team that made the least offensive arguments, while Liberia had three clear options. However, Chuchequero goalkeeper Miguel Aju and Michael Barrantes on the goal line prevented the visitors from going into the halftime break with the score in their favor.
Liberia should have had better luck in the first period, but Aju twice said no, and then after Adrian Garza’s header, Barrantes appeared to use his foot to prevent the ball from entering the back of the frame.
One of the most striking aspects of the match was the fact that Puntarenas coach Uruguayan Julio Fuentes led with a stopwatch, a way in which they controlled the timing of the match as the coach saw it.
There was also a more focused Puntarenas, with more experienced players such as Barrantes and Kenner Gutiérrez. In addition, Keven Alemán was present on the right side, trying to take advantage with his runs on the wing. However, the team lacked team spirit and more collective play, which is normal because the Buenos Aires team almost formed a new team.

In the second half, Liberia tried its best to find a goal to break the balance. The Liberians were superior to Puntarenas, but they lacked strength. Garza was worried that Colindres, who came on as a substitute, also had his arrival, but the offensive players lacked sharp aiming ability.
Liberian head coach Diaz Jr. bet on the offense of all his players from the beginning: Raul Vidal and Adrian Garza. Colindres, Justin Monge, Baron Sequeira and Nextaly Rodriguez came on the bench, but none of them had the key to unlock Puntarenas’ defensive lock.
