President William Ruto’s move to dissolve his cabinet has been welcomed across the political spectrum.

The incident comes as shocking news at a time when the country is facing a youth-led revolt against poor governance.

In an unprecedented move, the president sacked all ministers except Musalia Mudavadi, secretary to the prime minister’s cabinet and foreign minister.

Attorney General Justin Muturi was also sacked.

Ruto assured the nation that government operations would continue uninterrupted under the guidance of the Chief Minister.

Opiyo Wandayi, the liaison to Azimio party leader Raila Odinga in the National Assembly, described the move as a step in the right direction.

He told The Star that the radical move taken by President Ruto was necessary as it provided a new beginning.

“I welcome this move as it creates space for a fresh start that the country badly needs,” MP Uganja said.

“Sacking all Cabinet ministers is a good first step,” said Senate Minority Whip Edwin Sifuna.

Human rights defender Boniface Mwangi welcomed the minister’s sacking but said the dismissal should also extend to the Inspector General of Police, Japhet Koome.

“We told the president that what he was doing was a welcome move, but guess who is still in office? It was Qom who ordered the police to torture, arrest and kidnap young children,” he said.

Mwangi was at the center of youth-led protests that forced the government to withdraw punitive tax measures.

He asked: “How will he legally lead the young people he is killing?”

Azimio MPs Mark Nyamita (Wuriri), Babu Owino (Embakasi East) and Tabitha Mutinda (nominated senator) said the president should not make the same mistake when reshuffling the new cabinet.

“It is heartening to see him (Ruto) rise to the occasion and show he is in control. I hope the next cabinet will be a true reflection not only of the regions of the country but also of the demographics,” Nyamita said.

“I thank President William Ruto for his decisive decision to dissolve the cabinet. The president needs an effective cabinet to deliver the Kenya Kwanza plan,” Mutinda said.

Machakos Deputy Governor Francis Mwangangi said Kenyans should not celebrate until the new team is formed.

“Until we see the next cabinet, we can’t say it’s a good move because he could bring in a cabinet that’s worse than the last one,” he said.

However, former presidential candidate Reuben Kigame opposed the move and asked Ruto to follow suit and resign.

“Cabinet ministers are a secondary issue. Our main problem is President William Ruto. He is the one who appointed them. He too must go,” he posted on his X account.
