Frenchwoman Lauriane Nolot will go into the final stages of Thursday’s kite foil event in first place and has a good chance of winning gold, while among the men’s competitors Axel Mazella is also in the final.
The kite foil rankings were announced on Wednesday evening, after another day without official competitions due to lack of wind. In total, the men have competed in seven of the 16 preliminaries planned since Sunday, while the women have competed in six, the minimum planned to start the final stage.
“This was the most stressful day of my life. I knew it would be OK if I didn’t make it. So I was really happy to come first in the final, it was a big advantage and almost a guaranteed medal,” Nolote said at the end of the day.
“Tomorrow we have to do it like usual: run a lap, win and then +thank you and bye+”, she added with a smile.
The format of the kite foil finals is different from that of boats and IQFoil boards.
The top two teams from the series stage qualify for the four-man finals. The team ranked first at the start of the finals gets two points, the team ranked second gets one point. They join the other two participants from the two four-man semi-finals and play according to the same principle, with the highest-ranked player getting the advantage.
You need three points to win a gold medal. So Nolote only needs to win one round on Thursday to be crowned Olympic champion.
Frenchman Axel Mazella, who finished sixth in the preliminary round, will play in one of the two semifinals, where he will enter with one point, so his path to a medal will be tough.
“I’m going there with a knife in my mouth. But I have to win two rounds to get into the final. The chance of a medal is different than getting into the top four,” he said.
