Hamas announced that its leader Ismail Haniyeh had died after an Israeli raid on his home in Tehran. Haniyeh was in Iran at the time of the attack to attend the inauguration of the new Iranian president, Massoud Pezeshkian.
Ismail Haniyeh, who has been chairman of Hamas’s political bureau since 2017, is a prominent figure in the movement. Prior to that, he served as prime minister of the Palestinian Authority from 2006 to 2007 and as head of the Gaza Strip administration from 2014 to 2017. Haniyeh is known for his role as an international mediator and has represented Hamas in several conferences as a diplomat.
The attack was defined by Hamas as a “traitorous Zionist attack”, which was also confirmed by the Iranian Revolutionary Guards, who announced further details. The operation is part of the context of growing tensions in the region and comes just hours after another Israeli strike on Beirut, which killed Hezbollah military commander Fuad Shukr. This series of attacks will only exacerbate the already high tensions in the region.
Haniyeh’s death is a blow to Hamas given his leadership and his commitment to representing the group internationally.
