Bullet traps being installed at the Osceola Fish and Wildlife Club outdoor range
The Lakeland Osceola Fish and Wildlife Club took the plunge and installed four new bullet traps at its outdoor shooting range.
Each trap weighs about 2,000 pounds and is built by a local business from half-inch-thick AR500 steel, said Emil Spitkoski, a member of the club’s board of directors.
“The concept of this metal bullet trap is to collect/confine the bullet within the trap,” Spitkoski said.
“This design was first used by the Ashland Fishing and Shooting Club (Oregon, USA). They have been using this concept for 10 years and have found it to work very well and requires little maintenance.”
Spitkoski said the club believes they are the first in the province and possibly Canada to install metal traps to contain bullets at their outdoor shooting range.
“OFGC hopes to be good stewards of our land and water resources by taking proactive measures like these bullet traps to minimize our impact on the environment,” he said.
The nonprofit Oceola Fish and Wildlife Club is located at 11888 McGowan Road and offers indoor and outdoor venues for members.
Last week, July 21, the club hosted a shooting event for the Backcountry Hunters and Anglers Club. This North American nonprofit conservation organization is dedicated to preserving wild public lands, waters and wildlife through education and work to ensure the tradition of hunting and fishing in their natural environment.
Spitkoski said 14 people attended the July 21 event.
He said: “The shooting was well received and everyone had a great time as it was the first time for most people to shoot with a rifle or pistol.”
“This is the third time OFGC has hosted this annual event and we look forward to seeing you again next year.”
