CINCINNATI — Laila Fernandez lost to American Jessica Pegula 7-5, 6-7 (1), 7-6 (3) in the quarterfinals of the Cincinnati Open on Saturday.
Fernandez already had to win a tie-break to keep the match, and she needed to win one more to advance to the semifinals. However, Pegula led 5-2 and eventually won the tie-break 7-3 to take the victory.
In a match that lasted three hours and four minutes, Laval’s Fernandez converted six of 15 break point opportunities and won 59.4 percent of her first-serve points.
The 21-year-old also hit five aces and six double faults.
Pegula, the tournament’s sixth seed, broke serve seven times in 15 chances and won 62.8 percent of her first-serve points.
She had three aces and seven double faults in the match.
