Lahore: The anti-terrorism court in Lahore on Monday approved the 10-day detention of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf founder Imran Khan in 12 cases related to his alleged involvement in the May 9 riots.
The hearing was presided over by Anti-Terrorism Court First Judge Khalid Arshad, during which police sought 30-day detention of the former prime minister to investigate 12 cases related to the May 9 riots.
Imran participated in the proceedings through a WhatsApp video call from Adiala jail and was represented by lawyers Azhar Siddique and Usman Gul. They opposed the police’s remand request and said the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf founder must appear in person for the hearing.
The bench reserved its judgment after hearing arguments and announced the verdict soon after, allowing police custody of Imran for 10 days in five cases at Savar Road police station, three cases at Gulberg police station and one case each at Race Course, Shadman, Model Town and Mugharpura police stations.
Police officials said that among the dozen cases involving the former prime minister, two in particular have caught the attention of the police top brass, involving attacks on the residence of the Corps Commandant in Lahore and the Askari Minar.
Imran was charged for allegedly attacking a police station, military installations, government properties and officials in Shadman.
The first information reports have been registered at Sarwar Road, Gulberg, Race Course, Naseerabad, Shadman and other police stations in Lahore.
On Saturday, a 13-member team of the Lahore police’s investigation wing went to Adiala jail to question the former prime minister about the violence.
However, when Lahore police tried to approach the Tehreek-e-Insaf founder to question him in connection with the May 9 case, he refused to meet them, in which he was charged with multiple offences, including charges of inciting the public against the state.
According to Lahore Investigation Bureau Director Zeeshan Asghar, police arrested the PTI founder as he was the main suspect in 12 cases registered at various police stations in the city. Another senior police officer said that out of the 16 cases registered by the Lahore police in the May 9 attack, the investigating police arrested the PTI founder in 12 of them.
It is worth recalling that on May 9 last year, paramilitary rangers took Imran away from the Islamabad High Court in a corruption case, triggering protests across the country.
As the protests unfolded, social media was flooded with footage of riots and vandalism at several locations, including the residence of the Corps Commandant and Headquarters Lahore, the army’s headquarters in Rawalpindi.
