The Muslim Women’s Rights Promotion and Protection Organization has launched a three-year civic education program to empower youth, women and people with disabilities.
The Public Participation and Citizen Engagement Program aims to equip young people with necessary leadership skills and an understanding of the budgeting process and governance principles.
The goal is to transform the target groups into successful leaders and active contributors to governance and economic development.
The NGO’s coordinator, Mwalimu Ali, stressed that youths, women and people with disabilities have long complained that they are excluded from important development initiatives by the government at both the county and national levels.
He said the programme aims to address challenges affecting youth by promoting inclusion and preparing marginalised groups for future leadership and decision-making roles.
“We have received numerous complaints that the budget formulation process and overall development agenda have neglected the youth and other marginalized groups. Our intervention is aimed at empowering them,” Ali said.
He said the organization hopes to develop a generation of capable and responsible leaders who will proactively promote social justice and economic prosperity for all.
Ali said the initiative underscores a commitment to bridging representation gaps and ensuring all sectors of society have a say in shaping the future of their communities.
He said that through education and empowerment, they work to create a more inclusive and equitable society where everyone can contribute to and benefit from sustainable development.
Ali said they bring together leaders from the target groups and help them understand how things work from policy formulation to implementation of development projects and also participate in monitoring roles.
Informed and active participation, he said, would not only enhance the prospects of young people themselves, but also enrich the country’s overall governance and development prospects.
“Effective communication of project milestones and challenges is critical to increasing transparency and accountability,” Ali said.
He said the strategic approach aims to optimize resources while maximizing impact to achieve long-term growth and prosperity.
Youth Nasra Salim said the project has inspired them and provided them with new opportunities to grow and learn.
She said the project inspires young people to actively participate in activities that contribute to their own development and the development of wider society.
“Before this project, I would blame the leaders. I realised that we have a role to play in public engagement and development,” said Salim.
Hemedi Hamisi said he now understands governance and the correct channels for filing complaints, ensuring effective and proper leadership.
He said the knowledge gained through the project has empowered him and his colleagues to advocate for transparency and accountability among leadership.
