SINGAPORE: Kuala Lumpur City Hall has cancelled its Independence Day celebrations on Friday (Aug 30) to honour a woman who fell into the India Masjid Road sinkhole nearly a week ago and has yet to be found.
The celebration will be held on the eve of Malaysia’s Independence Day at Merdeka Square, a few hundred meters away from the site of the sinkhole.
Kuala Lumpur City Hall announced the cancellation of the event on social media on Wednesday night (Aug 28), calling for unity among Malaysians and urging Malaysians to show patriotism to mark the day.
“Let us unite – and live out the meaning of independence with patriotism,” it said in a Facebook post.
The victim of the collapse, Ms. Vijayaletchumy, was a tourist from India who was reportedly returning home after a two-month vacation in Malaysia with her family. She fell into the 8-meter-deep sinkhole in front of Malaya Building on India Masjid Road on Friday morning while walking to a nearby temple.
