televisionOn Friday night, the Big Soca Pop Up Party, attended by Krosfyah, took center stage. The atmosphere was great from start to finish. The event had that element missing from most parties these days, people were dancing instead of staring blankly at the stage or engrossed in their phones. Even a brief shower could not lower the temperature at the legendary venue of cricket.
From the moment the band emerged just after midnight, the ‘yardies were in heaven. Lead singers Khiomal Nurse and Edwin Yearwood were in great form. Nurse’s rubber waist still worked during Strong Back. Performances by Tony ‘Rebel’ Bailey and Ruff Rider added further energy to the band. Their energetic performance included hits such as Good Time, Pump Me Up, Oil Pumpin’ and Sak Passe. To satisfy fans’ requests, they dug into the archives for songs they hadn’t heard in a while, pulling out hits such as French Kiss, In a Jam and Haunting Melody. The medley included social commentary Something Greater and A Voice in My Head.
Yearwood encouraged partygoers to clap their hands to ease the pain from arthritis in their knees as they showed they still had the guts to pour a drink down their throats. The band went beyond their own repertoire. They energized the crowd with Alison Hinds’ “Togetherness” and RPB’s “Volcano.” They rounded out the set with Gabby’s “Hit It” and Grynner’s “Leggo I Hand,” and even threw in Spice’s “In De Congaline.”
Even though they finished an hour later, it was clear that patrons were still hungry for more soca music. Performances by Grateful Co, Leadpipe and Saddis satisfied their hunger, and they had no trouble keeping the enthusiasm high. By the time the live performances ended, the excited partygoers were already sweating.
In an interview with Barbados Today, the artist manager expressed pride in the success of the pop-up event, which began in 2018. She explained that she hopes to satisfy her fans and that she is energized by the excitement of fans having the opportunity to see their favorite bands still active on the local scene.
Holder told Barbados Today that the event was important for another reason, “This is a very important moment in my life, celebrating my 20 years in this industry, which is still not respected even in 2024. Some people think it’s just a hobby. But it’s what we do 24 hours a day.” Acknowledging that women in the entertainment industry face more challenges, she added, “As a woman in this industry, I’m very proud of the efforts I’ve made.”
Holder said she has an impressive line-up of artists, “I’m happy and proud to say that I have artists like Edwin Yearwood and Krosfyah, the young team of Leadpipe and Saddis, and most recently Chief Diin.” She has also worked with musical theatre stalwart Wendy Alleyne and international actress Vivica Fox.
Fans of the band will have another chance to see them perform as one of the featured acts in the National Cultural Foundation’s production of Soca 5.0. (STT)
