Gor Mahia’s trip to Nigeria for the inaugural Coal City International was cancelled at the last minute after the team boycotted training to demand a share of the Sh5 million prize money allocated by the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) for the annual football extravaganza.

The strike planners were issued formal show cause notices detailing their crimes and were asked to explain why no disciplinary action should be taken against them for failing to report for work.

Players facing further punishment from their clubs have 48 hours (starting last night) to respond.

Everything was going smoothly until yesterday afternoon when K’Ogalo team manager, Victor Nyaoro, was preparing the team’s flight to Enugu on Wednesday evening.

However, only young players and newly signed players took part in the training session, with most of the senior players refusing to train despite requests from management.

Nyaolo later posted on the team’s WhatsApp group that the trip had to be cancelled due to the letters being posted on the players.

The letter reads: “You must provide reasons in writing within 48 hours of receipt of this letter as to why no disciplinary action is being taken against you for breaching Article 6 of your contract with the club and Article 14 of the FIFA Regulations on the Status and Transfer of Players.”

Gor secretary general Samuel Ochola also issued a warning to players who decided to sit on the team bus despite heading to the training ground.

“It has come to our attention that you have deliberately refused to conduct training on various dates between July 27 and 30, 2024, and instead staged a sit-in at the Mpesa Foundation,” Ochola said in the letter.

“The club will therefore withhold your monthly salary, allowances and all financial benefits due to you during this period. If you fail to submit an explanation or response by the stipulated date, the club will proceed with its decision without further consultation with you,” the letter concluded.

Former Gor Mahia goalkeeper, Mathews ‘Ottamax’ Owino has called on players to behave properly and always read their contracts carefully before playing football.

This is not the first time that K’Ogalo players have gone on strike. In October 2017, they also launched a similar strike to demand their due pay.

Gor Chairman Ambrose Rachier He also said there was no clause in the Gor Mahia players’ contracts that entitled them to share in the bonuses if the team won the league title.

Disappointingly, Kogalo’s new head coach Leonardo Neiva lost the Cecafa Cup group match in Dar es Salaam on July 16, a match he had planned to use to evaluate his new signings and playing philosophy.

Gor Mahia is guaranteed a 5 million naira (about Sh478,000) appearance fee per match and the organisers will select a local team to replace them.

Kogalo are scheduled to face Brazilian powerhouse Corinthians in the Coal City Championship opener on August 2, before facing Benin Coton FC on August 4. They will finish the campaign on August 6 against Nigeria’s Remo Stars.
