The Kawambwa Magistrates’ Court has found Kawambwa MP Nickson Chilangwa guilty of malicious damage to property and sentenced him to five years’ imprisonment with compulsory labour.
The court also found Pambashe MP Ronald Chitotela guilty of arson and remanded him to the High Court for sentencing. Kawambwa Resident Magistrate Martin Namushi handed down the verdict today. Magistrate Namushi said he could not sentence Mr Chitotela to prison because the minimum sentence for arson is 10 years, which is beyond the jurisdiction of the magistrate.
Other suspects found guilty in the case include Kalumba Chifumbe and Davy Kaniki, who were sentenced to five years in prison for malicious damage to property.
The charges against Mr Chitotela, Mr Chilanwa and their co-accused stem from an incident during the 2021 general elections when they were accused of burnt a Mahindra car belonging to the UPND Luapura Youth Committee.
Meanwhile, the decision on the bail application of Mr Chiranwa and his accomplices is still pending.
