Katema breaks world record for fastest debut at Dubai Marathon

Dubai: Ethiopian runner Tigist Katema smashed the world record for the fastest finish at the Dubai Marathon on Sunday, beating the event record by more than a minute.

The 25-year-old won the gold medal in 2 hours 16 minutes and 7 seconds, becoming the eighth fastest woman in marathon history and breaking the Dubai course record by 61 seconds.

Katema, a former gold medalist in the 800m event at the African Under-20 Championships, established herself as a future long-distance runner by winning the 10km race at the 2022 Ethiopia Games.

Ethiopians swept the women’s podium in Dubai, with Ruti Aga (2:18:09) and Dera Dida (2:19:29) taking second and third place respectively. — Reuters
