Karbauskis does not consider Paluko as head of government: He would be the first prime minister convicted of corruption

“The wording is very vague. However, if Palukas is nominated as prime minister, he will be the first prime minister in Lithuania’s history to be convicted of corruption. He was a young conservative who attended the same school as G. Landsbergis (…) It was a school of theft. We cannot imagine that a person convicted of corruption can be prime minister,” R. Karbauskis told “Žiniai Radio” on Friday.

He reiterated that “farmers” would not join the coalition of Social Democratic Party prime ministerial candidate Paloukas.

“The party did not adopt such a decision, but if it was G. Paluckos’ proposal, I would advise LVŽS not to participate in the coalition. We are already facing a situation where political corruption has become the norm. The conservatives have lowered the political culture to a level we have never reached before,” said Professor R. Karbauskis.

“I can’t imagine participating in a coalition led by G. Paluckas. Obviously, their coalition will cooperate with the conservatives, because he is a very close friend of G. Landsbergis”, the “farmer” stressed.

ELTA reminded that the Social Democratic Party on Wednesday presented plans for parliamentary elections in October. In turn, the leader of the political force, Vilija Blinkevičiūtė, mentioned that if successful, she would form a government.

“If the people give the Social Democrats their utmost confidence in the parliamentary elections, I will form a socially responsible, mobilized and active government together with the president. There will certainly not be a situation where a storm hits Lithuania and the Cabinet of Ministers is asleep and unable to react quickly,” V. Blinkevičiūtė was quoted as saying in a statement released on Wednesday.

Although the president hinted that he would appoint V. Blinkevičiūtė as prime minister if the Social Democrats won the election, the politician who was re-elected as a member of the European Parliament (EP) did not clearly express his ambition to become the head of the government. Therefore, in early July, G. Nausėda also nominated Social Democrat G. Paluckas as a suitable candidate for the prime minister’s seat.

In an interview with Elta, G. Palukas said that he is ready to take the helm of the government if his party wins the parliamentary elections in the fall. G. Palukas assured that the situation would only be better if the party leading in the polls in Lithuania had two ready-made candidates for prime minister – himself and V. Blinkevičiūtė.

In the parliamentary elections in October, the LSDP list will be led by the party chairman V. Blinkevičiūtė. G. Palukas took second place in the multi-mission district list.

The Seim election will be held on October 13.
