Half of Gareth Southgate’s England Euro 2024 squad have never played in a major tournament, but captain Harry Kane says all of the players selected deserve their places and there is enough experience in their squad to succeed in Germany.
Southgate cut his squad for the June 14-July 14 European Championship to 26 players, with Harry Maguire, who has 63 appearances, and Jack Grealish, who has 36, both excluded.
“I think we have more than enough experience,” Kane told British media. “Especially because a lot of the players have only played two or three tournaments. There are always new players, players who deserve to come here.”
“For the players who miss out … it’s sad to see them go but ultimately that’s what you get when you play for England. The coach has to make difficult decisions.
“Everybody has a right to be here. That’s what we say. Everybody brings something different to the team and if we want to be successful, we need all 26 players.”
Bayern Munich striker Kane has been troubled by a back injury towards the end of the season but returned to action in England’s win over Bosnia and Herzegovina last week and in Friday’s 1-0 defeat to Iceland.
“I’m fine,” Kane said of his fitness. “My plan was to play 60 minutes against Iceland. It was a very good camp for me personally in that sense.
“A week of full training, 30 minutes (against Bosnia and Herzegovina), a couple of days of training, then 60 minutes. I feel well prepared and in good shape.”
England will begin their Euro 2024 campaign against Serbia in Group C on June 16.
