The Airai State representative for the 11th Olbiil Era Kelulau House of Representatives, Vicky Kanai, has announced her retirement from politics and she is the only incumbent member of parliament who has decided not to contest in the November 2024 general election.
“If you can do this, you must master the techniques of Chad and Airai. I will remember Chad, where there are sebechir ulsemuul of jellyfish Airai and Mo er tial deruchall,” Representative Kanai spoke about her reasons for leaving politics. “I have served my state for many years and I think it is time to retire and give others the opportunity,” Kanai stressed.
Representative Kanai has served in various political positions in Airai State for 28 years. She served in the Airai State Legislature (Ngerchumelbai during the Olbiil era) for 12 years and served as the Governor of Airai State for 8 years. She was elected to the Airai State National Assembly (Kelulau during the Olbiil era) in 2016 and was re-elected in 2021, serving as a representative of Airai State for a total of 8 years.
Kanai expressed deep gratitude to the leaders and people of Airai State for their trust and support for her as a representative over the years.
“I sincerely apologize to the people of Airai State for my belated decision, but I had to think deeply about my decision and its impact on my constituents, my family and my health. It was a difficult decision for me because the trust people place in you is precious, but I believe this is the best decision for my state of Airai,” Kanai said of the effort she put into making the decision.
She said she hopes her decision will inspire other Airai citizens who want to serve the state to have the opportunity to run for the Airai state representative position.
Representative Kanai is the only female member of the 11th Olbiil Era Kelulau House of Representatives, one of 16 representatives, while Senator Rukbai Inabo is the only female senator in the Senate, one of 9 senators. For a country with a strong matriarchal system, the number of female representatives in Congress is very low. Palau ranks 171st out of 193 countries in the world, with women accounting for 6.3% of the lower house (HOD) and 7.7% of the upper house (Senate). https://data.ipu.org/
